This was such a cute and fluffy holiday romance! I absolutely was not expecting Faking Christmas by Kerry Winfrey to be as fun and sweet as it was. I picked it up only because I wanted some more holiday romances this December and saw that a fellow reviewer I really respect rated it super highly. I’m so glad I can trust her judgment because it was spot on!
We’ve got classic tropes of forced proximity, there’s only one bed, fake marriage, and grumpy/sunshine and they all work perfectly well with one another. Laurel is our messy heroine who seems to mess everything up and only be good at being a disaster. She lies at work, desperate to keep her job, and forces a classic fake family rouse. Max is a family friend that Laurel is convinced is a bad person, despite everyone telling her the opposite.
The romance that builds between Laurel and Max is slow and genuine. Misunderstandings come to light, illuminating the path away from enemies. Max builds Laurel up, loving all the aspects she hates about herself. He puts himself in such vulnerable positions time and time again just to show Laurel he can be a good guy and that she isn’t a mess-up.
Faking Christmas by Kerry Winfrey is equal parts funny and romantic. There is no spice, but that is absolutely okay because sometimes, a fun and fluffy holiday romance is good enough! Definitely recommending this as a great, cozy, holiday read!
