Who would have thought a book with a cover that looks like it does, a nom de plume of stabby, and the concept of a serial killer falling for an obi profiler would be SO GOOD! The Risk by S.T. Abby was such a good quick read. I’ve already purchased the rest of the series because I need them.
Things move fast. And despite this being a dark romance that starts off with a fucked up concept, it is a pretty breezy read so far. What I mean by this is that, the topic can be heavy, but it moves quickly and doesn’t let you linger. We gloss over development and minutiae, and delve right into the broad strokes we’re here for, if you gather my meaning.
If you’ve read or been a fan of tv show Criminal Minds, then this will ring familiar. Logan feels very Hotchner but with Reed’s youth and Morgan’s sex appeal. I’m loving how quickly and hard he seems to fall for Lana, despite the red flags. His willingness to overlook certain oddities and quirks because he just wants Lana so much (or simply not to be forever alone), his yearning for her and a connection, just hits so right.
Lana herself, amazing. I love her and Jake. I love that she isn’t a damsel in distress. I love that she isn’t a character that holds back and lets men do what she needs to. A lot of dark romances tend to keep the woman vulnerable, submissive. Even when they bill her as hardcore, she still needs saving and can’t get her hands dirty. This is definitely not the case here. I am here for her revenge tour and hope she gets everything.
Do I recommend The Risk by S.T. Abby? Yes, with serious caveats. Obvious content warnings for SA, torture, murder, and homophobia. If any of that triggers, you might not want to pick this up. If you can, and want to see a cat and mouse romance? You’ll love this!
