review

Now, I’ve mentioned a few times how I’ll pick up a book on vibes alone. Wed to the Lich by Layla Fae is absolutely that type of book. I was clicking through recommendations and saw this cover and thought yes, this is made and meant for me. I was so glad to be so right when I finally got into it. It was sweet and sexy with just a bit of bite.

This is my first book in the Arranged Monster Mates series, despite it being book 8, so I’m not sure if anything gets more explained in previous books, but some cataclysmic event happened where numerous worlds/planes overlapped and converged before breaking apart. Folks were left stranded as a result. Monsters now reside on ‘earth’ with humans (and I guess in theory some humans live where monsters live now on their home planes.) One of these monsters is Virgil, a lich and one of the last of his kind. He wearies of life and loneliness, but feels like dying would be a disservice to his species. So, he decides to find an arranged bride at the Temple. That’s where he finds May, who is a sickly orphan with issues. They connect instantly.

The romance is so cute between Virgil and May. He is so worried that she hates him, that she is disgusted by his skeletal body. Virgil wants very badly to at least have a friend in May, despite being wildly in love with her already, he would be okay to settle so long as she is okay. May, meanwhile, is so scared and worried that Virgil dislikes her. That she is unsatisfactory as a bride. Their concerns over being a good partner and thinking they have a one-sided attraction is just so sweet. When they finally connect, it is sexy. The author does a great job explaining what Virgil’s body/anatomy is like because honestly? That was such a big question for me when picking this up based off of the cover. How can they kiss? How can they do it when he’s a skeleton? Well, I found out and it was hot as heck.

Wed to the Lich by Layla Fae was such a great, sweet monster romance. The pacing was perfect, the romance sweet and sexy, the angst just the right amount. I especially loved the ending. Be warned, however, I would say a content warning for folks reading this that might have issues with food because that is a huge trigger for May and she gets deep into it in her POV parts. Otherwise, I think this would be a good read for someone looking to get into monster romance.
